Paper Stock Classifications, Names, Descriptions, Specifications & Uses Paper Classifications

The following available paper stocks are classified as Envelopes Only, Text/Offset, Book, Cover, Card or Specialty paper stocks.

• Envelopes Only (Uncoated) text weight paper stocks are not flat sheets but actual blank envelopes which are run through a dedicated press that prints 1 or 2 color or PMS (Spot Colors) only and not four color (full color).
• Text/Offset (Uncoated) paper stocks are and primarily used for printing stationery products (mainly matching four color (full color) envelopes and letterhead) but text/offset paper stocks may also be used to print brochures, flyers, bulletins and inserts. Since text/offset paper stocks are uncoated and porous, they absorb more ink than coated stocks and are best suited for printing graphics and copy with light to medium ink coverage.
• Book (Coated) paper stocks are coated at the paper mill with either high gloss or matte coating and are primarily used for printing brochures, flyers, catalogs, mini catalogs, posters and CD/DVD products. When printing products with medium to heavy ink coverage on either graphics or text, coated stocks are best as they retain the ink on the surface of the paper stock which helps sharpen text and graphic layouts.
• Cover (Coated) paper stocks are more substantial in thickness, rigidity and feel than text/offset or book paper stocks. They come from the paper mill either high gloss or matte coated and are primarily used for highly durable brochures, flyers, door hangers, posters, rack cards and lighter weight postcards. When printing products with medium to heavy ink coverage on either graphics or text, coated stocks are best as they retain the ink on the surface of the paper stock which helps sharpen text and graphic layouts.
• Card (Coated or Uncoated) paper stocks are the thickest, most rigid and durable paper stocks. They come either high gloss (one side C1S or both sides C2S, matte coated (both sides) or uncoated (both sides). They are used to print highly durable brochures, flyers, bookmarks, business cards, door hangers, folders, metallics, postcards, greeting cards, promotional and rack cards. When printing products with medium to heavy ink coverage on either graphics or text, coated stocks are best as they retain the ink on the surface of the paper stock which helps sharpen text and graphic layouts. Uncoated stocks are porous and absorb more ink than coated stocks and are best suited for printing graphics and copy with light to medium ink coverage.
• Specialty paper stock refers to our 60 lb. Semi-Gloss adhesive backed stock which is used for "stick-on" style business cards, assorted labels and stickers. Any paper stock with a #1 quality rating is considered a Premium Paper Stock.

Defining Paper Weights

Text/Offset and Book paper stocks are described by their total weight in pounds for 500 - 25" x 38" sheets of the specific stock. Cover paper stocks are described by the pound weight of 500 - 20" x 26" sheets of the specific cover stock. Cover paper stocks typically include weights from 50 lb. to 110 lb. Card paper stocks are measured in points that give the thickness of the sheet in thousandths of an inch. For example, a 14 pt. cover stock is 0.0014 inches thick. The primary product uses for each paper stock listed below are noted under their respective paper stock classifications and names. The list below begins with text/offset weight stocks and continues through book, cover, card and specialty paper stocks.

Recycled Paper Stocks

Paper stocks displaying an asterisk (Recycled*) next to their names are either recycled paper stocks that are Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified and contain post consumer waste or paper stocks that are not Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified but do contain post consumer waste. This high quality, heavy weight card stock is typically used for printing 4/0 (full color front, blank back) or 4/1 (full color front, black ink back) but may be used for 4/4 (full color front, full color back) printing. Printing 4/4 on an uncoated side will require a longer drying (turnaround)time.
